TOPIC: HugePages for Oracle databases
We live in
the era of big servers with lots of relatively cheap resources like RAM and
disk being thrown in with shovels. But most of the existing software is not
ready out of the box to handle the growth that the servers are experiencing,
hence come new issues to deal with. With huge amounts of memory in today's
systems, properly handling this critical resource becomes paramount to avoid
performance issues. This presentation will comment on the overhead of managing
RAM and how this grows with the size of the memory chips. Most default
operating system configurations still use small page sizes which makes having
more RAM not a big advantage but, sometimes, a source of issues. We will go
back to the basics of HugePages: what they are, why should we be using them and
how do we take advantage of the feature. Aiming to have DBAs refreshing their
knowledge of this feature and put it to work for them.We will also see some
calculations on the impact of not using HugePages and some real-life situations
where not having HugePages in place was the hidden root cause of some issues.
