Chris started his career in IT in 1982 with a 7 year stint working on mainframes as a system programmer using assembler, COBOL, FORTRAN, B and C. Those were the days of punch cards, paper tape, magnetic tapes and disk drives the size of washing machines! From there he moved to Informix as team leader for the EMEA platform engineering group followed by a few years in the Advanced Technology Group. In 1999 he joined the startup TimesTen and has been working with the technology ever since. When TimesTen was acquired by Oracle in 2005 Chris initially held a senior pre-sales consulting role but in 2012 he returned to his development roots and is now the Product Management lead for TimesTen. Outside of work his interests are technology, reading (mainly sci-fi & fantasy), music and wine.

TimesTen 18.1 Scaleout: Architecture,
Availability, Scalability and Performance
In this talk we will introduce the architecture of the
Scaleout feature of TimesTen (new in the 18.1 release). We will explain how
Scaleout provides high availability and the options it provides in that area.
Finally we will discuss the factors that affect database (and application)
performance (latency, throughput, scalability) and how to optimise and tune the
system to maximise performance.

Demo: TimesTen 18.1 Scaleout
TimesTen 18.1 Scaleout. Live demo mixed with rotating
slideshow. Demo will show TimesTen Scaleout running in Oracle Ravello Cloud
service and demonstrate HA capabilities of Scaleout by running a workload and
displaying the throughput then killing/recovering different database elements
(VMs) and showing the effects on the applications and on database throughput.
